i4d
The i4d magazine, is one part of the a more comprehensive programme with the same name, the purpose of which is to build a knowledge repository for the domain of Information Communication Technologies and Development. The initiative looks at the applications of ICTs to developmental problems of under-developed and developing nations. The goal of the programme is to look into the development potential of new technologies, to study the efforts in this direction by governments, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders. The magazine also documents model-projects, generates field reportage, analyses trends, and collates development and ICT related news from a variety of sources.

Content and Coverage

i4d has covered a host of issues covering the entire gamut of themes in the ICT for Development sector. i4d magazine can claim to be the proud parent of four other magazines dealing on exclusive subjects like 'eGov', 'Digital Learning', 'eHealth' and the upcoming 'Telecentre'. i4d has covered issues like food security, livelihoods, HIV/AIDS, Gender Divide, Community Radio, New Media, Rural Development, Agriculture, Open Source, Microfinance, Human Rights, and many other related issues. Now each of the magazines have out grown and become self reliant to move independently conversing on the developments involved in the area to the interested and expert groups. Yet, i4d was never laid back, and continues to be a guiding force and a fertile ground for newer ideas, innovations and workforce.

i4d, in the future, plans to became a leading and exhaustive database in weaving a social fabric of ICT4D community. It aims to become an exclusive platform for knowledge sharing, an exercising board for networking and collaborative ventures, an advocating agency for policy changes in harmony with environment and in relevance with social and human needs.

Product Portfolio

The i4d programme includes a print magazine (monthly), an online portal (current and archived version of previous issues/news features), and a regular news service enabling an horizontal transfer of knowledge instantly to ICT4D peer group. The i4d (Information For Development) print magazine is one its kind, and is intended to provide a much-needed platform for exchange of information, ideas, opinions and experiences, both inside and outside the Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) sector. While several electronic publications do currently exist, i4d is perhaps the first that addresses the need by utilizing the strength and potential of the print media. The portal is a repository of five years of dedicated work by the i4d research team, and includes all the content generated by the i4d magazine for free and open access. The website also features a book review section, which is all set to be enhanced with new features, allowing third party experts to review the featured books. The various thematic issues covered by i4d over the years are categorised and available at The i4d initiative now has a good strength of experts/organisations/independent authors and a solid support of peer groups who share and work for common cause. The programme is now working on strategies for further improvisation in the quality of its content in terms of its 'reference value', 're-working on constructive appraisals/criticisms', being 'accessible to small and far off nations' and to reach, 'remotest of the communities'.

i4d has a circulation of about 5,000 print copies, of which 2,500 are distributed within India and 1,500 overseas, across Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa.
